Dr. Paul E. Nachtigall is the founding director of the marine mammal research program of the University of Hawaii’s Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. He is the former editor (1991-2000), and current editorial board member, of the journal Aquatic Mammals for the European Association for Aquatic Mammals, Guest Associate editor for Marine Mammal Science and past president of the over 2000 member international Society for Marine Mammalogy. His research interests primarily focus on the sensory systems of marine mammals.
Dr. Nachtigall is former head of the Research Division of the, now closed, Naval Ocean Systems Center’s Hawaii Laboratory. In that position he supervised over twenty- five veterinarians, scientists, trainers and technical and support personnel. Currently appointed to the graduate faculties of the Zoology, Psychology, and Marine Biology Departments of the University of Hawaii, as well as its School of Ocean Earth Sciences and Technology, he has organized 11 scientific meetings ranging from Maui to Moscow.
Dr. Nachtigall additionally has published 6 edited books and over 130 peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters in reviewed books. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, an Honorary Member of the European Association for Aquatic Mammals and the vice chair of the University of Hawaii Institutional Animal Care Committee. He was also a member of the Research Subcommittee of the Sanctuary Advisory Council of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. He was a member of the Research Subcommittee of the Western Pacific Fisheries Management Council, the Marine Mammal Commission’s Committee on the effects of Noise on Marine Mammals and the NOAA Noise Exposure Criteria Panel. He has delivered 17 invited addresses at scientific meetings in the last two years, and is frequently invited to consult on a variety of issues ranging from sound in the ocean to the environmental impact of raising sunken ships.
