Dr. Vasif Hasirci is a chemist and is expert in biomedical, biotechnological and nanotechnological applications of natural and synthetic polymers. He is the Di rector of the Center of Excellence in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering at the Middle East Technical University (METU). He is the President of the Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Society (Turkey), and the Di rector of the Graduate Department of Biomedical Engineering at METU. He has more than 160 SCI journal papers, and has supervised 40 M.Sc. and 20 Ph.D. students. Prof Hasirci is a Fellow of the Science Academy in Turkey, a Fellow of the International College of Fellows of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE), and a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC)(UK).
Tissue engineering is based on biodegradable scaffolds (or cell carriers), primary or stem cells and bioactive agents like growth factors and aims at substituting damaged tissues with viable constructs prepared under in vitro conditions. In order for this scaffold to be fully covered and then replaced by the healing tissue it should be made of biodegradable materials which are mostly polymers of synthetic (polylactides, polyurethanes) or biological (collagen, hyaluronic acid, chitosan) origin. The interaction between the materials and the cells are very crucial. The contact molecules and surface chemical and physical cues are very important in this interaction especially at the micro and nanolevel. This presentation covers related aspects to cell-material interactions and also about new scaffold production methodologies.
